The 150-year-old Wigan and Leigh College, is one of the largest government funded further education institutes in the UK. With a budget of over 30 million sterling pounds per annum, the college has established an active presence in over 23 countries, including India.

Wigan & Leigh College started operations in India in 1996. Today, the college has campuses in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Indore, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Business Management, Fashion Technology, Advertising & Graphic Design and Media Studies.

Wigan and Leigh college Bangalore has moved to a new campus on Dickenson Road and plans to introduce new courses in Management in the areas of Human Resource and,International Business. College also planning to introduce new courses in Faishon Techonolgy, Media Mass communication , Apparel merchandising and marketing ,Visual communication, Interactive media etc at undergraduate and post graduate level.

RECOGNITION

As per a recent survey conducted by the UK government, Wigan & Leigh College has emerged as UK’s leading college for further education, with an outstanding 34% of grade 1’s against a national average of 13%. The top grades were achieved for excellence in teaching, staff-student relationship, student support systems, provision for equal opportunities, resources, facilities and links with other universities, business and industry.

Wigan Management School has also been awarded the ‘Centre for Excellence’ award by the Institute of Management, UK; which is the apex body of management schools in the UK.

FACULTY & TEACHING PHILOSPHY

At Wigan & Leigh, students are trained to compete with the best in the world under the guidance of a faculty with an excellent academic and professional background in specialized fields. To maintain international standards, the faculty is regularly trained by the faculty members from Wigan, UK.

This faculty is represented by IIM graduates, CIM/CIMA members and senior industry professionals for management courses; fashion designers and alumni of NIFT & other top fashion schools for fashion courses; and practicing designers, creative directors, well-known industry consultants and alumni from NID and other design institutes for advertising and design courses.

The college recognizes that all students are different and have specific needs that must be addressed. Towards this end, the college follows a Specialized Personal Tutor System, which ensures that students receive extensive advise and guidance as well as customized training and support throughout the program.

INFRASTRUCTURE

In addition to the excellent teaching and support services, Wigan and Leigh campuses in India provide a wealth of facilities to make the life of the students at the campus effective, pleasant and rewarding. These include well-stocked libraries, fully air-conditioned classrooms with contemporary audiovisual equipments, most modern computer centers, fashion laboratories, design workshops/ studios and cafeterias.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Wigan & Leigh College desires to maintain its high standards, which ultimately depends on the quality of students enrolled. To ensure this, a strict selection process is followed. The procedure starts with a group discussion, which is used as a tool to assess communication & leadership skills of the candidate. It is followed by an interview that essentially helps to judge the ability of the candidate to undergo the programme applied for. For fashion or design courses, the candidates are assessed on the basis of his/her portfolio & creative ability

Counselors at Wigan & Leigh continuously assist the candidates on identifying the ideal course according to ones interest, abilities and potential.

PLACEMENTS

Wigan and Leigh, India is the first college in the country to have launched an apprentice programme for PG courses, wherein the students are placed on the very first day of joining the course. They get to work with any one of the partnering organisations for the entire duration of the programme and get paid for it. Students get the opportunity to be absorbed by the partnering organisation, on successful completion of the course and satisfactory work performance.

In addition to the above, the college also has a specialized Placement Cell, which continuously works in close cooperation with the Industry so as to provide the best placements across the globe to its students. The cell also assists the students in industry related activities like projects, industry training, organizing seminars, pre-placement talks and campus interviews, apart from various other students – industry interactions.
